Business & Occupation (B&O) Tax Revenue
On Track
Why This Measure Matters
B&O taxes are paid by businesses when they conduct business within the city limits. The B&O tax represents the second largest source of general revenue for the City and helps fund fire and safety protection for all community members as well as upkeep of the City's many parks. Higher B&O tax revenues also reflect a prosperous local economy.
The graph reflects all B&O tax collection across all funds and types. This includes public and private utility tax as well as transportation benefit district tax.
What’s the Story?
The data shows a general upward trend in B&O tax revenue over the years. While the increase from 2024 to 2025 may indicate growth in business activity and economic development in Olympia, the City's new Tax Review Team has been working hard to improve education and compliance among businesses since the second half of 2024, potentially increasing total collections further.
