Through quality volunteer experiences, we create a culture of stewardship in Olympia to preserve our natural areas.

What’s the Story?

• Community members have volunteered in parks to restore habitat by controlling invasive plant species, planting native vegetation, and removing garbage for over 25 years.  Volunteer hours consistently average near the target goal, demonstrating staff's commitment to coordinating welcoming, engaging, and meaningful opportunities to connect with nature.
• Volunteer opportunities include twice-weekly work parties as well as independent stewards and Adopt A Park groups. In 2025, volunteers removed more than 500 cubic yards of invasive plants and installed 1,692 trees or other native vegetation.
• Program staff are managing a record number of individual Park Stewards, a trend that emerged during COVID. Unlike spontaneous work party volunteers, Stewards require more management and coordination.
• Many restoration projects are planned in partnership with Public Works Environmental Services and contribute to the NPDES Stormwater permit requirements. In addition, the Park Stewardship program provides almost all of the City-sponsored volunteer opportunities that support the City’s climate goals.
