Why This Measure Matters

Sales taxes are collected and distributed by the State of Washington and represent the largest source of general revenue for the City. Growth in sales tax revenues can reflect a prosperous local economy.

The City of Olympia works to create a safe, clean and well-run place in which we can thrive. Sales tax revenues fund upkeep of our roads, fire and safety protection for all community members, and solutions to houselessness. They help facilitate access to cultural experiences in the City and care of the City's many beautiful parks.

The information in the graph is sales tax collection across all funds and types. It includes the housing and homeless sales tax, both public safety sales tax as well as the cultural access sales tax.

What’s the Story?

Over the years, there has been a general upward trend in sales tax revenues with some fluctuations. The increase can indicate growth in consumer spending and economic development with the City of Olympia.

Starting April 1, 2024, collection of the 2023 voter approved Thurston County Proposition 1 Public Safety Tax and the Councilmanic Transportation Benefit District Sales Tax started, with 2025 being the first full year of collections.
